As I write this, I’m miles away from the comfort of home, working offshore in the Danish waters aboard the Noble Resolve. It’s been a unique and intense experience since I arrived here on July 29th, and I want to share a bit about what this journey has been like—especially as I recently celebrated my birthday out here on August 11th, far from the usual celebrations and familiar faces.
Spending my birthday offshore was a different experience, to say the least. Instead of the usual festivities, I found myself surrounded by the relentless challenges of well testing. The crew, whom I had just met, made the day a bit special despite the demanding environment. It was a reminder that even in tough situations, there are moments of camaraderie and connection that can make all the difference.
Working with a new crew has been both challenging and rewarding. Stepping into an environment where you don’t know anyone can be daunting, especially when you’re in the middle of the sea with nothing but the job and the people around you to rely on. But this crew, although unfamiliar at first, has quickly become a group of individuals I respect and trust. We’ve faced some tough situations together—particularly with a well that has been stubbornly difficult to clean up due to persistent emulsions that have made separating water from oil a real headache.
Adding to the challenge, I had a bout of illness during my time here. I suspect it might have been COVID, but despite feeling under the weather, I didn’t let that slow me down too much. Training for the Bucharest Marathon on October 13th has been a constant in my life, and even offshore, I’ve kept up with my workouts in the gym. It’s not easy balancing a demanding job with marathon training, especially when you’re not feeling 100%, but the focus and determination that both require have kept me going.
Working night shifts has added another layer of complexity. The long hours and the isolation of the night can sometimes make the job feel even more demanding, but it also gives me time to reflect. I’ve found that these quiet hours are perfect for pushing through mental and physical barriers—whether it’s figuring out a new solution to the emulsion issue or hitting my stride on the treadmill.
This experience has taught me a lot about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of teamwork. Being offshore isn’t just about the technical aspects of the job; it’s about the human connections you make, the challenges you overcome, and the personal goals you continue to chase, even when the odds aren’t in your favor.
As the days progress, I’m looking forward to finishing this well clean-up successfully and, of course, crossing the finish line in Bucharest. This journey, with all its ups and downs, has been an incredible chapter in my life, and I’m grateful for the lessons it continues to teach me.
